5 Advantages Of Diesel Backup Generators

systems, some are designed for farm use, and others can be towed behind a truck to a work site. One popular type of generator are diesel backup generators. There are a lot of things going for a diesel powered generator, lets take a look at some of the advantages of a diesel powered engine.


A diesel engine has more torque. Torque is what supplies the power to run a generator. For really large diesel backup generators, this can be really important, especially for generators required to kick on and run critical systems, such as found in a hospital. If a hospital loses power, the generators need to be powerful enough to support the many different life saving systems that are being run to treat, monitor and save hundreds of lives.

A diesel engine has better fuel efficiency. This is easy to think of in terms of an automobile where you are talking about miles per gallon. For example, a full size pick up with a gas engine averages 12 or 13 MPG. But a similar diesel truck will easily get 18+ MPG. Now, diesel backup generators are not actually going anywhere, but the truck example illustrates that for an equal amount of fuel, your diesel generator will run for a longer period of time. When power is lost, you often don’t know how long you will need to rely upon the generator before power returns. The better fuel efficient your generator’s engine is, the better.

Diesel backup generators will have an overall longer life than a gas powered generator. This is because a diesel engine is, by design, beefier than a gas engine. A diesel engine is a compression engine, this means that it squeezes the fuel/air mixture until enough heat is built up that it ignites on its own, no spark plugs are used. The explosion caused by compression versus plug is more powerful, so the engine has to be heavier duty to handle that extra explosive force.

The above reason leads into the next benefit of a diesel engine, it requires less maintenance. This is simply due to the fact that it has less moving parts. As previously mentioned, it is a compression engine, so no spark plugs, which means no spark plug wires or distributor, all things that need to be replaced periodically on a gas engine.

Finally, if in a real bind, a diesel engine can burn other fuels without any alteration. Rudolph Diesel, the inventor of the diesel motor ran his first engine on peanut oil. Other vegetable oils will work also, though I wouldn’t suggest running your diesel engine on other fuels unless it is a real emergency!

Now, one of the main complaints against diesel engines is the noise. And though diesel backup generators may also be louder, many of them are larger industrial sized units. Most such businesses keep these types of units a basement or other out of the way place, where most people will not hear them, so this concern does not apply in most instances.

For larger generator needs, diesel backup generators should be given serious consideration. The engines are more powerful, more fuel efficient, require less maintenance and last longer than equivalent gas powered motors.

Thanks to the work of one man, Rudolf Diesel, we have a choice when it comes to driving. Besides hybrid or rotary engines, the chief way most vehicles run is via a gasoline powered internal combustion engine. However, with Diesel’s 1892 patent of the engine that bears his name, diesel power has played a significant role in powering buses and trucks across North America. Some passenger vehicles, particularly pick up trucks, are also diesel powered giving motorists an option to gasoline.

Diesngines have the following advantages over their gasoline counterparts:

Diesels use air compression to create combustion versus the air/fuel mixture required by gasoline powered cars. This attribute means that diesngines do not require spark plugs and thus do not have to be tuned up.

Diesel fuel has a higher fuel density than gasoline resulting in fumy increases of 20-30% over comparable gasoline powered models.

Diesngines are cheaper to maintain as they have less parts vs. a gasoline engine. The lifespan of a diesngine is also significantly longer.

If it is torque you need, particularly for pulling a boat, camper, or equipment, than a diesngine has the advantage. A diesngine is definitely slower especially when starting from a dead stop, but when climbing hills or going over bridges, your diesel powered vehicle can definitely handle the challenge.

So, why aren’t more vehicles built in North America diesel powered? A few reasons including:

Stricter emissions control standards. Diesngines pollute more, so not many manufacturers have improved upon the technology to produce an engine that is environmentally friendly. However, several upcoming engines from VW and others may change all of that.

Not enough power. Yes, a common complaint, even with turbo diesels, is that the engines are not powerful enough. North American drivers are accustomed to getting on the highway with a minimum amount of effort. With a diesngine, it can tas much as twice as long to get up to full speed.

Fortunately, several aftermarket product developers are helping motorists squeeze out more power from their diesngines. Performance programmers, made for specific diesngines, are helping motorists see a nice spike in horsepower as well as increases in torque. The beauty of some of these aftermarket parts is that they don’t harm fuIn fact, some claim to help improve it.

Yes, the number of diesel powered passenger vehicles presently on North American highways is presently very small; however with newer, cleaner and stronger engines on the way, you may soon find yourself opting for a diesel powered vehicle too.

is much thicker than petrol and vaporizes much more slowly. It’s often referred to as “fuel oil” because of its consistency. Oftentimes forgotten, diesel is an organic matter.

“Give a diesel engine clean fuel and it will run forever and a day.” This old saying is less of an exaggeration than you might think. Maintenance statistics show that ninety percent of trawler diesel engine problems result from fouled fuel. The promise of doing away with 9 out of 10 potential failures should put fuel-system maintenance at the top of your list.

The most common signs of fuel contamination in a boat are blocked filters, and reduced engine performance. However, the absence of these conditions does not necessarily suggest that your diesel fuel is not contaminated. In fact, it is probable that every trawler’s fuel is somewhat contaminated. Diesel Fuel pick-up tubes, where the diesel engine draws fuel from the tank, typically sit about 3/4 of an inch off the bottom of your fuel tank floor. This placement is designed to protect the engine from contamination that has fallen to the bottom of the fuel tank. Therefore, you may never realize that you have a diesel fuel contamination problem until the fuel is disturbed in some way – such as when you are in rough seas in your trawler.

Alternative Cheap Diesel Engine Fuel Sources

Trips to the library and a purchase of one particular book called “From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank” and I was on my way. I invested in all the hose and fuel lines with electrical fuel selector valves.

Heat is a necessary component in this venture. Without a heated tank the oil will not reach a combustible temperature. Feeling confident in the alternative fuel system on the vehicle, I decided to test it and made a round trip of 150km. With that being a success, I pushed the system a little harder and with tools in hand, and extra vegetable fuel on board, drove a distance of 1100km return.

The exhaust, when running on WVO, smells like burnt deep fried oil. The emissions are considerably reduced and there is no sulfur. Restaurants are more than happy to give away the oil, as they have to pay, to have it taken away. It needs to be filter down to about 5 microns before it can be used so there will be no damage the injectors or the injector pump. The possibilities are endless, as any diesel engine can run on used vegetable oil. This is a win/win situation for everyone involved.

With over 200,000 kms of driving experience and two diesels that have been converted to run on veggie oil, I have found through trial and error the restaurants with the cleanest oil. Since the exhaust fumes of alternative fuel cars can smell like french fries, next time the scent of greasy fries hits you as you are on the highway, don’t look around to see if there is a restaurant close by, check to see if you are following a diesel car!
